The head of Samsung's TV business recently announced that the company will launch a 115-inch RGB MicroLED TV this year.

This new model features a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel and represents a premium extension of its existing Neo QLED TV lineup, which also uses LCD panels but with Mini LED backlighting.

Designed as an ultra-high-end product line, the RGB MicroLED TV was unveiled by Yong Seok-woo, President and Head of the Visual Display Business at Samsung, during a press event in Seoul. He also noted that more models will follow the 115-inch version.

Unlike Neo QLED TVs that use white LEDs for backlighting, RGB MicroLED TVs utilize red, green, and blue (RGB) LEDs.

White LEDs typically achieve white light by combining blue LED light with phosphor coatings, which mix various wavelengths. This mixture reduces color purity when the light passes through color filters.

In contrast, RGB LEDs emit pure red, green, and blue wavelengths directly. Even after passing through color filters, this leads to significantly higher color purity. As the name "MicroLED" suggests, these TVs also use much smaller LED chips, enabling higher contrast thanks to more precise local dimming zones.

According to industry sources, Samsung plans to commercialize its RGB MicroLED TV in June.

Observers are closely watching how Samsung will differentiate its RGB MicroLED TVs from its existing MicroLED product line, which uses self-emissive MicroLED chips and does not rely on an LCD panel.

Additionally, Yong Seok-woo shared that Samsung shipped 1.4 million OLED TVs last year and plans to significantly increase shipments this year. Samsung sources its OLED TV panels from both Samsung Display and LG Display.

Yong also stated that Samsung is targeting a total TV shipment volume of 40 million units this year.
