Industry sources revealed that several 8GB and 16GB DDR4 SODIMM and UDIMM modules are slated for discontinuation, with the last shipment scheduled for December 10. Products based on 1y-nanometer 16Gb DDR4 chips will be the first to experience a sharp supply reduction. Although module manufacturers will still be able to procure some DDR4 chips from Samsung, availability is expected to remain tight.
Samsung is also ramping up its shift toward more advanced memory technologies like DDR5 and LPDDR5. Output from the older 1y-nanometer process is being significantly scaled back, which is expected to accelerate DDR5 adoption among PC OEMs.
Other memory manufacturers are also adjusting their product strategies. Micron previously issued a notice indicating it will discontinue certain DDR4 modules for server applications produced using older processes, though it will continue to supply other DDR4 products. SK Hynix is reportedly planning to reduce DDR4 production to 20% of its total memory output, although a definitive EOL schedule has yet to be confirmed.
