MediaTek will launch a 7nm chipset supporting 5G later this year

According to a new report, chipmaker Mediatek plans to introduce a 5G chipset this year. This new chipset will compete with Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 and Hess Kirin 980. The MediaTek chipset is primarily used for entry and mid-range smartphones. The new MediaTek 5G chipset will use a 7nm manufacturing process.

According to MediaTek, the new chipset will be much more powerful than the latest Helio P90. Unlike other products, this chipset will be positioned in the high-end market.

It also features advanced AI capabilities and the ability to use ARM's latest Cortex-A76 CPU. The Helio P90 is MediaTek's best processor to date, and it is an impressive chip. It is manufactured in 12nm and is currently being used in multiple midrange devices.

In order to realize the 5G function of this new chipset, MediaTek confirmed that it will launch the M705G modem later this year. The first handset powered by this modem will be available in the second half of 2020. The company did not provide an exact date or time frame for the release of the new chipset.

Although its target is the high-end market, related 5G phones will be cheaper than competitors. For example, Samsung and LG smartphones using the Snapdragon 855 chipset and SDX50 modem are priced at about $800-$1,000. The price of other brands of 5G mobile phones is also much higher than that of non-5G mobile phones.
