Korean media: SK hynix, which is seriously losing money, will continue to increase its memory chip business.

According to BusinessKorea, the industry is speculating that SK hynix is likely to strengthen its system semiconductor business.

According to FnGuide, the market tracking on June 19, SK hynix expects its second quarter sales to reach 6.44 trillion won ($5.59 billion), while operating profit will be 822.8 billion won ($7.0139 billion). This figure has decreased by 37.94% and 85.24% compared with the same period of last year. In addition, some people predict that SK hynix's operating profit in the second quarter will reach about 700 billion won (595.1 million US dollars), lower than market expectations.

Recently, more and more Korean and foreign investment banks have recently expressed concern that SK hynix may lose money in the fourth quarter. This is because the demand for memory chips has not increased due to the growing trade dispute between China and the United States. Due to the US sanctions against SK Hynix's major customer Huawei, the recovery in demand may be further delayed. Some experts also said that the normal market trend of “low demand in the first half of this year and increased demand in the second half of the year” may not appear this year.

Therefore, it is speculated that SK hynix may try to change its unbalanced business structure in the long run. Samsung Electronics, which leads the storage chip industry, is currently investing heavily in the system semiconductor industry.

SK hynix has also taken the first step in the field of system semiconductors. The company divested its foundry business unit in 2017 and established SK hynix System Integrated Circuit Co., Ltd. The subsidiary produces CIS image sensors. It is expected that the business area will be extended to artificial intelligence, Internet of Things and automotive memory chips in the future. In addition, SK hynix is expected to support its system semiconductor business by acquiring Magna Chip Semiconductor, which operates the foundry business.

However, there are still many people who expect SK hynix to pay more attention to the next-generation memory chip business rather than the system semiconductor business, because its primary project is to build a semiconductor cluster in Yongin. It is more effective as a leading company in the field of memory semiconductors by ensuring next-generation product technology. In fact, the company recently successfully developed the next generation of solid state drive (SSD) standard technology for the first time.

On June 18th, SK hynix released the next-generation SSD designed for the data center, with faster processing speed and longer life. For the first time, the chip giant used ZoneNamespaces (ZNS) software technology to showcase the next generation of SSDs.

According to SK hynix, ZNS is a software technology that enhances data storage management by dividing SSD storage space into multiple partitions. "With the advent of artificial intelligence and the advent of the big data era, data center operators are increasingly demanding SSDs. ZNSSSD is expected to increase data processing speed by 30% and lifetime by four times that of the previous generation of solid-state drives." Lux spokesperson Lux said.
