US film component manufacturer FirstSolar recently released information that will focus on the development and sales of Series6 component technology, followed by the use of trusted third-party EPC partners to serve US market projects rather than do it yourself.
This decision will not affect the projects being built and planned for delivery this year, but will strengthen the company's position and competitiveness as a leading PV module supplier in the United States.
FirstSolar is expanding its capacity to meet the needs of Series6 components, and the company's second plant in the United States is expected to go into production in early 2020, with a cumulative investment of nearly $1 billion.
Once in production, the new Ohio plant will bring the company's Series6 capacity to 5.4 GW/year and make it the largest PV module manufacturer in the United States.
This change also reflects the shift in component technology to large-scale series components.
This transformation of FirstSolar will affect approximately 100 employees who will leave the company at different stages of the process and will receive compensation and reemployment support.
