ANLOGIC: Design of ventilator system based on FPGA SoC

The ventilator is an instrument that can completely replace the patient's breathing or achieve assisted breathing function. It is suitable for patients with respiratory failure or even stopped breathing. It can help patients inhale oxygen and expel carbon dioxide. There are many severe cases of patients with new coronary pneumonia, and the ventilator is of great help.

Anlu Technology is a local FPGA supplier in China, providing FPGA-based SoC products. This article recommends using the EF2M series SoC chip as the main control, and proposes a system control scheme for positive pressure ventilator.

The positive pressure ventilator sends air into the lungs by increasing the pressure in the airways, and the pressure in the lungs increases to expand the lung cavity. Then the pressure is reduced. When the pressure is lost, the elasticity of the lung tissue causes the lungs to contract to their original shape, exhaling carbon dioxide out of the body. Most ventilators currently use this method of increasing airway pressure to inflate patients.

Generally, a DC motor is used to control the air pressure of the ventilator. The motor is controlled by a PWM signal. Adjusting the duty cycle and period of the PWM signal can control the speed of the motor. FPGA logic can generate high-precision PWM signals, and the pressure control is smooth and accurate, providing comfortable and stable air pressure.

After the DC motor works, the airflow is sent to the mask. There is a pressure sensor in the mask. The pressure sensor converts the pressure into a current signal and sends it to the main control board to be collected by the ADC. Anlu's EF2M45LG144 SoC integrates dual ADCs and can collect up to 15 analog signals. After the air pressure data is obtained, the air flow is adjusted to feedback, which can prevent sudden malfunctions, air leaks, and deviations in pressure accuracy caused by fluctuations in power supply voltage.

Anlu SoC is a single-chip system integrating FPGA, MCU, ADC and Flash. The block diagram is as follows:

Anlu EF2M45LG144 device has the following advantages in the ventilator system control scheme:

1. Supports up to 114 general-purpose IOs, which can connect buttons, display, communication and more external interfaces.

2. Built-in CortexM3 hard core, working frequency 125MHz, integrated I2C, SPI, Uart and other peripherals, on-chip large-capacity SRAM as the ROM, RAM required for MCU work, is a complete single-chip system. The single-chip microcomputer system can perform functions such as parameter setting, data transmission, status display, and management interaction.

3. The MCU interacts with the FPGA logic through the AHB bus to complete the parameter configuration of the PWM signal and adjust the PWM Step step by step, so that the airflow will not be suddenly changed, and the patient's respiratory system will feel uncomfortable.

4. Built-in ADC, collect up to 15 analog signals.

5. Built-in Flash, storing MCU program and FPGA configuration. After the chip is powered on, both MCU and FPGA can start work.

In summary, the selection of Anlu SoC chip has a high degree of integration, which can greatly simplify the system circuit, improve the flexibility of the system and improve the cost performance. In addition, in addition to medical ventilators used clinically, with the improvement of living standards, people pay more attention to health. Light-weight ventilators are suitable for pulmonary heart disease, asthma, snoring, apnea and other symptoms. They are necessary for home use and have a very broad market prospect.
