At the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) eV-Evangelization Summit in Detroit, Intel demonstrated its latest PohoikiBeach chip system that can simulate more than 8 million neurons. The advent of the neural mimicry system indicates that humans have taken a big step toward the goal of "simulating the brain."

The new neuromorphic system contains up to 64 Loihi chips, integrating 132 billion transistors, with a total area of ​​3,840 square millimeters, more than 8 million "neurons" (equivalent to the brains of some small rodents) and 8 billion "Synaptic." Intel said that the chip system is executed a thousand times faster than the traditional CPU in artificial intelligence tasks, and the energy efficiency can be increased by 10,000 times. The new form factor chip brings huge technological advances in image recognition, autonomous driving and automated robotics.

Similar to neurons in the human brain, Loihi has digital "axons" for transmitting electrical signals to nearby neurons, as well as "dendrites" for receiving signals, and there are "synapses" for connection between the two. . Intel said that systems based on this chip have been used to simulate the tactile sensing of the skin, controlling prosthetic legs, playing table football games and other tasks.

For artificial intelligence researchers who are experimenting with new hardware platforms, the new neural mimicry system has exciting prospects. In addition, researchers are using neurochips to improve the way prosthetics adapt to uneven ground and create more accurate digital maps for autonomous vehicles.

Intel predicts that by the end of 2019, the company will launch a system PohokiSprings capable of simulating 100 million neurons and 1 trillion synapses. The system will contain 768 chips and 1.5 trillion transistors.
